Don't get one bulky pair of pants. Instead, buy three specific layers: long johns or silk tights to wick away moisture, some thin wool pants to insulate and retain heat if you get wet, and a wind/water-resistant shell for extreme conditions. Of course, you will most always be wearing the first two layers, unless you're hardcore and board with only undies on.

I give this advice as a Vermonter who has sledded, skiied, and snowmobiled for many years.

Take tofu's advice. Also if you aren't that afraid of the cold, you could skip the wool pant part. Having a wind/water proof outer-layer is the most important.

Bostonian rep. =D. (snowboard daily, with a season pass to Stowe)

I grew up living less than an hour from Stowe, and now I live 1/2 an hour away! My family has been rockin' the Vermont scene since the late 1760s (before it was a Republic or a State.)

That's sick! i live quite far away from Stowe. I prefer Killington better in Vermont, but unknowingly i got a season pass to Stowe this year and it has been sweet. :D
